Why Brand Protection on Amazon Matters?

1. Enroll in Amazon Brand Registry

A highly effective method to safeguard your brand on Amazon is by enrolling in the Amazon Brand Registry Services. This initiative aims to help brand owners protect and preserve their intellectual property. It ensures their products are represented correctly on Amazon.

Here's how to track and manage fake listings with Amazon brand protection management –

Monitoring Counterfeit Products

  • Regularly Check Your Listings: Utilize search and Amazon brand protection report tools to monitor product listings for any questionable activity consistently. It includes your brand name but is offered by unauthorized sellers at reduced prices.
  • Check Customer Feedback: Negative comments regarding quality problems may signal counterfeit items. Ensure that you investigate any concerns indicating that the product may not be genuine.

This software assigns a distinct barcode to each of your products, confirming its authenticity. It enables the Amazon platform and its customers to verify the authenticity of products.
  • Amazon Brand Gating Policy: Amazon's Brand Gating policy requires sellers to apply for permission to sell certain branded items. It helps block unauthorized listings and counterfeit goods. To participate, brands must be registered in the Amazon Brand Registry and hold a valid trademark.

Reporting Counterfeit Products

  • Provide Documentation: When reporting a fake item, include all relevant details such as proof of your trademark registration, photos of the product, and any customer complaints or feedback.

Conducting Amazon Test Buys

Amazon test purchases play a crucial role in the brand protection strategy. It is used to detect unauthorized sellers and safeguard your brand's reputation in the online marketplace. The order IDs from test purchases are verified as counterfeits to submit complaints in the brand registry.

A test purchase allows companies to verify packaging, product authenticity, and warranty conditions. It ensures that customers get genuine products. The tests also help manufacturers and authorized distributors identify pricing infringements, counterfeit items, and grey market operations.

Steps to conduct an Amazon test purchase –

  • Selecting a Target Seller- It is essential to determine the retailer, distributor, or marketplace seller to examine. Examine the seller's background, including their feedback and any previous infractions.
  • Making a Test Order allows you to buy the item like an ordinary customer, maintaining confidentiality. Observe the costs, ordering procedure, delivery time, and any extra fees incurred.
  • Receiving and Analyzing the Product-After delivery, inspect the packaging's condition. You must confirm authenticity with serial numbers, holograms, or brand markings, and cross-reference it with official brand standards.
  • Recording the Findings- Carefully record every detail, including invoices, receipts, tracking data, images of products, and correspondence with the seller.
  • Taking Action - If you find violations, determine the appropriate response, which may include sending a formal notice, terminating supply contracts, notifying relevant marketplace authorities, or initiating legal proceedings.

3. Manage Your Brand's Visibility on Amazon

Besides registering for Brand Registry and monitoring counterfeit listings, you also need to manage your brand's visibility on Amazon.

Here are some ways to do that –

Create Accurate and Detailed Listings

  • Write Detailed Descriptions: Provide precise, clear, and thorough product descriptions that highlight the key benefits and attributes of your product.
  • Keep Listings Updated: Regularly update your product listings with the latest details. It includes enhancements, packaging modifications, or new features.

Use Amazon A+ Content

4. Take Advantage of Amazon's IP Accelerator

If you haven't registered your trademark yet, Amazon's IP Accelerator program can help speed up the process. The IP Accelerator links you to law firms focused on intellectual property.

Using Amazon's IP Accelerator allows you to gain Brand Registry protection even while your trademark application is under review.

5. Safeguard Your Intellectual Property

A practical method for achieving Amazon brand protection is to defend your brand and secure your intellectual property (IP). It includes trademarks, copyrights, and patents that safeguard your brand's logos, designs, product attributes, and content.

6. Report False Negative Reviews

Negative feedback that breaches Amazon's Terms of Service can damage your brand's image and negatively impact sales. You must examine any unfavorable review to determine if it violates Amazon's policies.

If the review breaches Amazon's guidelines, file a support ticket that includes the reviewer's name and a link to the review in question. It shows how it violates Amazon's policies.

Consistently check your case log and emails for updates regarding your request. Follow-ups are necessary to ensure that action is carried out.

7. Link Your Selling Account to Your Brand

The first step to linking your selling account to your brand is to register with the Amazon Brand Registry. Once the brand name is active on the marketplace, you can provide a trademark and detailed information about the products.

This is a crucial step for enhanced protection of your brand page and to have complete control over your product listings. The account link to the brand strengthens your presence in the marketplace and protects the store from counterfeits and inaccurate information.

Here’s a step-by-step guide –

  • Log in to the Registry – Use the credentials set during the registration to access your Seller Central account. We have previously discussed how to enroll in the registry and provide the brand name and trademark details.
  • Product & Distribution Details – As a seller or a vendor, you must submit your product images, brand logo, and detailed information about the manufacturing and distribution process. It will help verify the brand ownership. Beyond these, you can add additional brand-related documents.
  • Merchant Token Download – After uploading all the necessary documents, you will need to download the merchant token. Go to your Seller Central Account and click on Settings. Then click on Account Info. Here, you can locate your Merchant Token. Copy it.
  • Linking the Account to the Brand – Once you have downloaded the merchant token, go back to your Seller Central or Vendor Central Account. Here, you will find a section to manage connected accounts. Click on "Connect Selling Accounts" and enter your merchant token. Follow the prompts to confirm the connection, and your work is done.

The primary purpose of linking or selling an account to the brand is to safeguard your intellectual property. You can further access advanced brand-building tools and elevate your customers' shopping journey.

8. Link Your Brand to Products using Category-Specific Files

Beyond using the merchant token to link the account, there is another method to protect the brand and also enhance visibility and the shopping experience.

Linking your brand to product listings using category-specific files keeps your brand presence organized, makes shopping easier, and is beneficial for SEO.

Here’s how to link the brand to the products with category pages –

  • Go to the Upload Page: Navigate to the Inventory tab in your Amazon Seller Central. Find the 'Add Products via Upload' option and select 'Upload Your Inventory File'.
  • Download the Category-Specific Template: Once you select as mentioned, you will be redirected to the 'Add Products via Upload' page. For new products, use the Custom or Category template. However, if adding existing products, download the 'Listing Loader template'.
  • Add Product Details: Provide all the necessary product details in the downloaded Excel sheet or .txt file. You must add Seller or Vendor SKU, product names and descriptions, brand name, and other highlighting attributes. If you have a specific category, select the relevant one from the drop-down list.
  • Re-upload the File: Once done editing, save it in a tab-delimited text (.txt) or Excel (.xls) file. On the 'Add Products via Upload' page, select the saved file and submit it for processing.
  • Monitor the Status: You can track the status and review processing reports if the task is unsuccessful, and make corrections accordingly.

Once done, the target customers will find it easy to explore categories and products under the brand name, streamlining their shopping experience. Furthermore, linking the brand to the products helps in SEO and targeted marketing.

  1. Assign Selling Roles to Users

You must establish a Brand Registry account and submit complete information regarding your intellectual property and products. If you are currently selling on Amazon, you can set up your Brand Registry account with the same information.

It is the exact details that you use to access Seller Central. It will connect your accounts, ensuring you can use brand protection features in both and reach out to the users.

An Administrator can assign protection roles by following these steps:

  • Access your Brand Registry account.
  • Place your cursor over the gear icon, and then choose User Permissions. Select ‘Invite a User’ to your brand from the User Permissions tool.
  • Provide the email address for the Brand Registry account you wish to associate with. Also, provide the user's name and preferred language.
  • Choose the brand you wish to associate with the user.
  • Select the store where the user will log in to access their Brand Registry account.
  • Check the boxes beside the role or roles you wish to assign to the contact.
  • Finally, click the "Send invitation" button.

10. Syncing the Brand Name to the ASIN

You need to initially register your brand and trademark with Amazon to safeguard your ASINs through the Amazon Brand Registry. After receiving approval, you create a new ASIN for your item, or you can use an existing ASIN ("Amazon Standard Identification Number").

You must ensure your brand is correctly linked to the product's Amazon catalogue page for enhanced protection. It links your brand's intellectual property to the ASIN, enabling you to utilize Brand Registry tools. Conduct a full update in your store to safeguard against unauthorized use or listing infringements.

Sellers must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Product Bundling policy. It allows them to create bundles that include consumable products in the grocery, gourmet food, pet, baby, health and household, personal care, beauty, or luxury beauty product categories.

Amazon restricts the creation of new ASINs for a brand enrolled in Brand Registry by sellers to protect the customer shopping experience. It is designed for those who do not have a sales role assigned within the brand.
